Long time ago there was large amount of water on Mars and all the iron that was present on mars turned into iron oxide due to rusting. Now the water has dried up due to climate change on Mars.

Human beings can live on Mars with a lot of artificial life support. If you had an enclosed shelter with the right equipment for recirculating air and human body waste, you could live indefinitely. You would weigh about a third of what you weigh on earth. Without artificial life support, people could not live out in the open on Mars, because there is not enough oxygen in the atmosphere and the temperature is too cold to sustain life.
