Question

Mass centre of a system of three particles of masses 1,2,3 kg is at the point (1 m,2 m,3 m) and mass centre of another group of two particles of masses 2 kg and 3 kg is at point (1 m,2 m). Where a 5 kg particle should be placed, so that the mass centre of the system of all those six particles shifts to mass centre of the first system?

Solution

We can analyze the situation as mass 6kg is at (1,2,3), another mass of 5kg at (1,2,0). We have to find the position of other mass of 5kg to be put say (x,y,z) so that the final center of mass is at (1,2,3)

xCM=m1x1+m2x2+m3x3m1+m2+m3

1=6×1+5×(1)+5×x16

x=3m

yCM=m1y1+m2y2+m3y3m1+m2+m3

2=6×2+5×(2)+5×y16

y=6m

zCM=m1z1+m2z2+m3z3m1+m2+m3

3=6×3+5×0+5×z16

z=6m

Hence position of new mass of 5kg should be (3m,6m,6m)
