Shorea is a genus of about 196 species of mainly rainforest trees in the family Dipterocarpaceae. Semi-evergreen forests are generally considered as a transitional stage between evergreen and moist deciduous forests. The tropical deciduous forests are characterised by evergreen trees mixed with deciduous having typical features like less dense canopy, frequent buttressed trunks, thicker and rougher barks, and heavy climbers. E.g., Hopea.
Wet temperate forests are found at altitudes of 1800-3000 m in the cooler and humid mountains. They are distributed in the eastern Himalayas from eastern Nepal to Assam, in the western Himalayas from Kashmir to western Nepal and in Nilgiri Hills of south Indian. Chief characteristic feature of the forests is dense formation of evergreen, semi-evergreen broad-leaved and coniferous trees of up to 25 m height. Dominant trees in the forests of western Himalayas are angiosperms like Quercus, Betula, Acer, Ulmus, Populus, Corylus etc.
Picea mariana (black spruce) is a North American species of spruce tree in the pine family. It is a genus of about 35 species of coniferous evergreen trees in the family Pinaceae.
