Solution

The correct option is C 1 - C, 2 - A, 3 - B
Planet Earth is unique due to the presence of life on it and each living organism contributes to the restoration of life on this planet and making it a habitable place.

The variety and variability of living organisms and ecosystems on this planet contributes to its biodiversity. Human intervention over the years has resulted in the rapid loss of biodiversity in many regions of the world leading to extinction of many species and threatening many with extinction in the future.

Thus, conservation of biodiversity has become a priority and the reasons to justify the need for conservation can be categorised as follows :
  • Ethical reasons : Every organism on this Earth has an intrinsic value, irrespective of whether they have an economical significance to mankind or not. All these organisms have an equal right to live. Thus all organisms need to be conserved for sustainable development and to pass on a rich biological legacy to the future generations.
  • Narrowly utilitarian reasons : It includes all the direct or economic utilities that derive from the biotic resources. These include food materials, medicines, fabrics and industrial products (resins).
  • Broadly utilitarian reasons : It is based on the various services provided by the biotic resources that help in stable functioning of the ecosystem. This includes prevention of soil erosion by plants which hold the soil firmly with roots and protect it from being washed off by blowing wind or running water.
Hence option c is correct.
