There are various reproductive strategies that organisms adapt based on the abiotic (availability of nutrients, temperature, etc) and biotic components (competition within the same species, predation, etc) of the habitat in which they live.
Some organisms such as the Pacific salmon fish and bamboo breed only once in their lifetime while others like rats breed many times during their lifetime.
Another strategy that organisms adapt is to produce large numbers of small sized offspring. E.g: Oysters, pelagic fishes, etc.
Some other organisms produce small numbers of large sized offsprings. E.g: Humans, kangaroos, elephants, etc.
