Adrogens are produced by the adrenal cortex in both men and women. Excess of androgens in females cause PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome) and adrenal virilism. Women with PCOS may have infrequent or prolonged menstrual periods. Women suffereing form adrenal virilism develop certain male characteristics like beard, mustache and also deepening of voice. Excess production of androgens in males lead to developing female characteristics like the enlargement of breasts.
