India's population growth was stagnant before 1921 and the period from 1911-1921 registered negative growth. 1921 has therefore been termed as the year of Great Divide. Population grew at a moderate pace post 1921 and the trend till 1951. After this, the pace quickened and the population grew rapidly to stand at 683.33 million by 1981. The growth stabilized after 1981 and the population in 2011 was recorded to be 1.21 billion.
