Simple epithelial tissues are categorised into:
1. Cuboidal epithelium- It is composed of a single layer of
cube-like cells. Its function are secretion & absorption. It is present in lining of pancreatic duct, kidney etc.
2. Ciliated epithelium- If columnar or cuboidal cells possess cilia on their free surface then they are termed as
ciliated epithelium. Its function is to move mucous in a specific direction over the epithelium.
3. Columnar epithelium- These cells are tall polygonal cells with nucleus present at the base of the cell. Its function is secretion & absorpton. It is present in inner surface of gall bladder, stomach etc.
4. Squamous epithelium- It is a layer of thin, flat cell with prominent nuclei. It forms inner lining of blood vessels, lung alveoli etc.
5. Keratinized squamous epithelium - It is made of horny, scale-like remains of dead squamous cells. It is impervious to water. It forms epidermis of skin.
