A group of cells having a common origin and usually performing a common function is known as a tissue.
Plant tissues are classified into the following two groups based on whether the cells being formed are capable of dividing further or not:

1. Meristematic tissue:
They are found in the growing regions of the plant like the root and the shoot tips and undergo active cell division.`

2. Permanent tissues:
The cells of the permanent tissues generall do not undergo further divisions. It is further divided into two types:
a. Simple tissues - They have all cells similar in structure and function. Example - Parenchyma, Collenchyma and sclerenchyma.
b. Complex tisuses - They are made up of many different types of cells. Example - Vascular tissues like xylem and phloem.

The sclereids are a type of sclerenchyma which are spherical, oval or cylindrical, highly thickened dead cells with very narrow cavities (lumen).
