Question

Match the Column-I(Chemical species) with Column-II(Oxidation number of sulphur).

Open in App
Solution

In List I
A. Since "S" or sulphur atom is neutral, therefore the oxidation number of S is 0. Hence, A-3 is the correct match.

B. In H2S, let us consider the oxidation state of S be x. The oxidation state of H is +1.
Therefore, 2×(+1)+x=0x+2=0x=2
Hence, B-4 is the correct match.

C. In S2Cl2, let us consider the oxidation of S be x. The oxidation state of Cl is -1.
Therefore, 2×(x)+2×(1)=02x2=0x=+1
Hence, C-2 is the correct match.

D. In H2S2O8. Let the oxidation state of H be +1, oxygen be -2, peroxide oxygen (two peroxide oxygen are present in this compund) be -1, S be x.
Therefore, 2×(+1)+2×(x)+6×(2)+2×(1)=02+2x122=0x=+6
Hence, D-1 is the correct match.
