Solution

(A) Yeast - (III) fermentation

  1. Fermentation is defined as a metabolic process that occurs in yeasts like Rhizopus, in the absence of oxygen during which breakdown of sugars takes place.
  2. Common end products of fermentation in yeasts are ethyl alcohol and carbon dioxide.

(B) O2 transport - (IV) hemoglobin

  1. Oxygen is transported to the different tissues in the body with the help of a protein known as hemoglobin in the blood.
  2. Oxygen binds to hemoglobin and forms oxyhemoglobin which transports oxygen from the lungs to the tissues.

(C) O2 absorption - (I) Alveoli

  1. In lungs, oxygen is absorbed from the air into the alveolar walls by the process of diffusion.
  2. This oxygen then moves from the alveoli to the blood through the small blood vessels known as blood capillaries present in the alveolar walls.

(D) Diaphragm - (V) Inspiration

  1. The diaphragm is the muscular partition that separates the thoracic and abdominal cavity.
  2. During inhalation, the diaphragm contracts and flattens causing an increase in the volume of the thoracic cavity and the lungs.

(E) Gills - (II) fishes

  1. Gills are the respiratory organs in the fish.
  2. They are involved in the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide from the water.

Final answer:

Column IColumn II
(A) Yeast(III) fermentation
(B) O2 transport(IV) hemoglobin
(C) O2 absorption(I) alveoli
(D) Diaphragm(V) inspiration
(E) GIlls(II) fishes
