Question

Match the compounds, Ethanol, Methane, Ethanoic acid, Ethyne, and Ethene with the description given below:

Ethene is formed when it is dehydrated by concentrated Sulphuric acid.

Solution

Ethene is an unsaturated hydrocarbon because it contains a double bond between the Carbon-Carbon atoms.

Ethene has the molecular formula of (C2H4).

The dehydration of alcohol gives the unsaturated alkene as the major product.

Ethene is formed when Ethanol (C2H5OH) is dehydrated by concentrated Sulphuric acid (H2SO4).

The balanced chemical equation of dehydration of Ethanol is written as:

CH3CH2OHConc.H2SO4CH2=CH2+H2O(Ethanol)(Ethene)(Water)

Therefore, Ethene is formed when Ethanol is dehydrated by concentrated Sulphuric acid.
