Antonie Van Leeuwenhoek is known as the 'father of microbiology' as he was a pioneer in microscopy and laid the foundation for microbiology. Robert Hooke observed the cork cells using a primitive compound microscope. He observed honeycomb like structures and named them cells. Matthias Schleiden was a botanist who studied plants, confirmed that all plants are made of cells. Theodor Schwann studied animals and confirmed that all animals are made of cells. Both of them together proposed the cell theory.
