Solution

Electronic configuration:

The electronic configuration is the distribution of electrons in different orbits or shells of an atom. Starting from the shell closer to the nucleus, shells are named K, L, M, N, etc. Each shell can hold a number of electrons.

  1. K shell can hold a maximum of 2 electrons.
  2. L shell can hold 8 electrons.
  3. M shell can hold 18 electrons.
  4. N can hold a maximum of 32 electrons.

Therefore, the electronic configuration is given as:

A. Chlorine - (iii) 2, 8, 7

The atomic number of Chlorine is 17. Hence, its electronic configuration is given as 2, 8, 7.

B. Nitrogen - (v) 2,5

The atomic number of Nitrogen is 7. Hence, its electronic configuration is given as 2,5.

C. Phosphorous - (iv) 2,8,5

For phosphorous, the atomic number is 15. Hence, its electronic configuration is 2,8,5.

D. Potassium - (i) 2,8,8,1

The atomic number of potassium is 19. According to the Bohr Bury scheme, the electrons in the shell can be filled using the equation formula 2n2 where, n is the number of orbits and the electrons that can be accommodated in the outermost shell is 8.

Hence, its electronic configuration is 2,8,8,1.

E. Argon - (ii) 2,8,8

Argon is a noble gas, has atomic number 18.Thus, its electronic configuration is 2,8,8.

Hence, the correct matching is given as:

ElementElectronic configuration
A. Chlorine(iii) 2,8,7
B. Nitrogen(v) 2,5
C. Phosphorous(iv) 2,8,5
D. Potassium(i) 2,8,8,1
E. Argon(ii) 2,8,8
