(A) Calcium hydroxide reacts with carbon dioxide to form white turbidity of calcium carbonate.
CO2+Ca(OH)2⟶CaCO3(whiteturbidity)+H2O
(B) When Zn reacts with mixture of NaOH and SO2 rotten egg smell of hydrogen sulphide is obtained.
Zn+2NaOH+SO2⟶Na2ZnO2+H2S↑(rotteneggsmell)+O2
(C) Permanganate ion oxidizes sulphur dioxide to sulphate ions and itself is reduced to Mn(II) ions. This makes solution colorless.
3SO2+2MnO−4+2H2O⟶2MnO2+3SO2−4+4H+
Sulphur dioxide reacts with bromine water to form colourless solution.
SO2+Br2+2H2O=2HBr+H2SO4
(D) When iodate ions react with sulphur dioxide in presence of starch, blue color of starch ioide complex is obtained.
2IO−3+5SO2+4H2O⟶2HSO−4+3H2SO4+I2
In this reaction, iodate ion is reduced to iodine. The liberated iodine reacts with starch to form blue coloured starch iodide complex.
