Charan Singh broke from the Congress to form the Bhartiya Lok Dal and strongly advocated the interests of farmers. He was critical of the Nehru policy of collective ownership and believed that farmers must have a right of ownership. He strongly articulated keeping agrarian sector at the centre of planning. He is credited with formulating and implementing the Zamindari Abolition Act. Ever year, Farmers day is celebrated in his memory.
b. P.C. Mahalanobis → i. Industrialisation
P.C. Mahalanobis was an Indian scientist and a statistician who was the main architect of India’s second year plan that laid emphasis on the industrial sector and development of industries like railways, iron and steel and electricity under the public sector. His model also aimed at building a domestic consumption sector that requires investment in developing capital goods.c. Bihar Famine → ii. Zoning
It is argued that Bihar famine was the result of acute shortage of food in all the districts of Bihar, primarily due to less production and the government policy of zoning that prohibited private trade on food across the state. This reduced the availability of food in Bihar, dramatically impacting the poorest sections the most. It also resulted in huge price rise. It was found out that the rice price in Bihar was four times higher than in Haryana.d. Verghese Kurien → iv. Milk Cooperatives
Verghese Kurien , the milkman of India, also known as the Father of White revolution is credited for launching Operation Flood that made India the largest producer of milk in the world. Operation Flood organised the cooperatives of milk producers into a nationwide milk grid with the purpose of increasing milk production, bringing the producer and consumer closer by eliminating middlemen and assuring the producers a regular income throughout the year. Kurein founded 30 institutions (like Amul) managed by farmers and is credited with success of Amul dairy products. He is regarded as the greatest advocates of the cooperative movement in the world.
