In the 8th century, a Shaivite philosopher named Shankara travelled throughout India and propagated a new doctrine called ‘Advaita Vedanta’.

In the 11th century, a Vaishnavite philosopher named Ramanuja propounded ‘Vishishtadvaita'.

Basavanna founded Veerashaivism. Later practiced as Lingayatism which rejected brahmanical ideas of caste, ritualistic worship and idol worship.
