The Air Force is divided into seven commands as of 2020. Among these, five are operational commands. And two are functional commands.

The purpose of the operational command is to hold military operations using aircrafts within its area of responsibility.
The operational commands are as follows: Western Command in New Delhi, Eastern Command in Shillong, Central Command in Allahabad, South Western Command in Gandhinagar, Southern Command in Thiruvananthapuram.

Functional commands have to maintain all aircrafts and ensure that they are ready for warfare. Training Command in Bangalore and Maintenance Command in Nagpur are the two functional commands.
