Chromosomal theory of inheritance was given by Sutton and Boveri. It states that chromosomes are the carriers of the genes and the behaviour of the chromosomes during meiosis can be used to explain the segregation of alleles that formed the basis of Mendelian inheritance.
Physical association of genes on a chromosome is called linkage. The experimental verification for the same done by T. H. Morgan.
Alfred Sturtevant, one of the students of Morgan, explored the position of genes on the chromosomes (gene mapping) by using recombination frequency. In his experiments, he observed that the higher the number of offspring with recombinant phenotypes, the higher was the distance between those two genes.
In 1900, three scientists, Correns, Tschermak and Hugo de Vries independently rediscovered Mendel’s work and gave full credit to Mendel.
