Anther wall consists of four layers- epidermis, endothecium, middle layers and tapetum. The epidermis is thick-walled and gives protection. Endothecial cells have fibrous thickenings which are hygroscopic helping in anther dehiscence. Middle layers are thin walled and short-lived while tapetum is the innermost layer that supplies nutrients to developing pollen.
