Column I Column II
i. Myasthenia gravis a. Accumulation of lactic acid
ii. Osteoarthritis. b. Autoimmune response to synovial membrane
iii. Gouty arthritis. c. degenerative disease
iv. Osteoporosis. d. Autoimmune response to neuromuscular junction
In rheumatoid arthritis, the body’s immune system attacks the joints of the body specifically the lining membrane called the synovial membrane. All the diseases that involve such a pathological process are called autoimmune diseases.
Osteoarthritis-The cartilage present in between the bone slowly wears down until the two articulating surfaces are rubbing against each other causing severe pain and stiffness as well as restructuring of the joint. This is fittingly known as a degenerative disease.
Gouty arthritis-This is a disease caused by metabolic derangement. The primary problem here, is either overproduction of uric acid, a byproduct of protein breakdown.
Osteoporosis-This disease results from a lack of homeostasis or balance between mineralisation and resorption of calcium and phosphorous from the bone.
Myasthenia gravis- This is a disease that affects the neuromuscular junction. Like rheumatoid arthritis it is an autoimmune disease, with the body’s ownantibodies attacking the receptors on the muscular end of the neuromuscular junction.
