Nitrogen, phosphorous and potassium (NPK) are the major macronutrients required by plants. The main functions of NPK are:
Nitrogen: It is one of the major constituents in proteins, nucleic acids, vitamins and hormones. It is particularly required by meristematic tissues and the metabolically active cells.
Phosphorous: It is a constituent of cell membrane, nucleic acids and required for phosphorylation reaction. It helps in root stimulation, increases stem strength and improves flower formation.
Potassium: It helps to maintain ionic balance in cells and is involved in protein synthesis, opening and closing of stomata.
