Mizo National Front was formed in 1961. The main demand of this organisation was a ‘Greater Mizoram’. In 1966, Mizo National front announced an ‘Independent Mizoram’. The central government dealt firmly with this rebellion. When the situation calmed down in 1972, the Mizo majority area was given the status of a Union Territory. Laldenga on behalf of the MNF met the late Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1985. Following this meeting, Mizoram was given the status of a full fledged state. Laldenga became the first Chief Minister of the state.
