Mechanical contraceptives are devices which are used to prevent fertilization by physical means. The different kinds include:

  • (a) is a male condom - it can be worn on an erect penis before coitus to prevent the entry of sperm into vagina.
  • (b) is a female condom - this is similar to a male condom, but used by women and can be inserted into the vagina to prevent the entry of sperm.
  • (c) is a copper T device - in this device, copper ions are released that cause changes in the endometrium, making it increasingly hostile towards sperm. It also cause changes in the cervical mucus that adversely affect sperm motility and survival. This device must be inserted by a doctor and will remain in place for the active lifespan of the device.
  • (d) is a cervical cap - a cervical cap and vault cap are both variations of the diaphragm. Diaphragms are rubber or plastic devices with a shallow cup-like structure, like a flat dome. It has a flexible rim usually fitted with a spring for a secure fit. It sits in the vagina, covering the cervical opening. There are various sizes ranging from 5 to 10 cm in size. A doctor must fit the patient to ensure that the diaphragm doesn’t slip.
