Refractive index is defined as the ratio at which light moves through a material (v) with respect to its speed in vacuum (c).

Mirage formation is a result of refraction and total internal reflection of light. It is an optical phenonmenon in which light ray bends to produce a displaced image of a distant object.
In glass slab, emergent ray is parallel to the incident ray but shifted a little. This is known as 'Lateral Displacement'.
