Different animals have different organs for respiration.
∙ Fishes respire through highly branched tissue filaments called gills. When water passes over the gills, the dissolved oxygen in water diffuses across the gills into the bloodstream. The circulatory system then carries the oxygenated blood to the other body parts.
∙ Insect bodies have openings called spiracles through which the oxygen is taken in. Spiracles connect to tubes called trachea which further divides into smaller tubes. Oxygen passes through these openings to the whole body, while the carbon dioxide diffuses and takes an exit through spiracles.
∙ Frogs respire both through skin and lungs. It absorbs dissolved oxygen from the air via its moist, slimy skin by the process of simple diffusion. When the frog is on land, it respires through a pair of lungs.
