Match the following organs to their functions regarding respiration.
I.Heart and blood vesselsa) Gas exchangeII.Lungsb) Transport of gasesIII.Musclesc) Breakdown of glucose to obtain energy
I – b, II – a, III - c
The lungs are the site of exchange of the gases oxygen and carbon dioxide. It is here that the body absorbs oxygen from the air and releases carbon dioxide back into the air.
The transport of these gases is carried out by blood which is pumped throughout the body by the heart using a network of blood vessels. Thus, the circulatory system transports the gases from the lungs to the body and back.
The muscle cells like any other cell in the body absorb oxygen from the blood and use it to break glucose. This releases usable energy as ATP required for all life processes.
