In a hypertonic solution, like in sugar or salt solution, there is movement of water from lower solute concentration to higher solute concentration i.e from inside of the cell to outside sugar solution, to attain equilibrium. It results in shrinkage of the cell. In the hypotonic solution, the medium outside cell has a higher water concentration than the cell. Hence, the water molecules will move from outside to inside the cell, resulting in the swelling of the cell. In the isotonic solution, the concentration of water in cell is same as outside. Hence, there will be no movement of water and the cell will remain the same.
