Solution

Industrial production of sulphuric acid is carried out by contact process. The different stages involved in contact process are:

Step 1. Production of sulphur dioxide(SO2):

S(g)+O2(g)SO2(g)
It is carried inside the burner.

Step 2. Oxidation of SO2:

2SO2(g)+O2(g)V2O5 2SO3(g)

Step 3. Absorption of SO2 and formation of oleum (H2S2O7):

SO3(g)+H2SO4(aq)H2S2O7(aq)
It is carried in the absorption tower.

Step 4. Dilution of H2SO4 to produce sulphuric acid:

H2S2O7(aq)+H2O(l)2H2SO4(aq)
It is carried in the dilution tank.
