Distance is the actual length travelled by an object irrespective of the direction in the path. Displacement, on the other hand, is a vector quantity with both magnitude and direction. It represents the shortest distance between the initial and final positions of the object in the path. A body's state of rest or motion depends on a reference point or object with which its state is compared. Objects moving with the same velocity are at rest with respect to each other, whereas an object with some speed is in motion with respect to another stationary object.
