During the Medieval period, there were three types of land based on ownership in Kerala- Cherikkal, Brahmaswam, and Devaswam. Cherikkal was the land owned by the Naduvazhis, Brahmaswam was the land owned by the Brahmins, and Devaswam was the land owned by the temples and the owners were known as Ooralar.
