Rutherford and Willard studied the radiation emitted by radioactive substances. It was found that the radiations are of three types.

(α)-rays deviate slightly towards negatively charged plate as these rays are positively charged.

(β)-rays deviate towards the positively charged plate as these rays are negatively charged.

(γ)-rays do not deviate in the electric field as they are electrically neutral in nature.
