Solution
The gastro-intestinal tract (GIT) is composed of four layers from outside to inside:
Serosa: provides mechanical support and is composed of squamous epithelium (mesothelium) and areolar connective tissue. Mesothelium secretes fluid to decrease friction both outside and inside the tract.
Muscularis: provides motility of bolus in the tract and has two muscles known as longitudnal muscle and circular muscle. Myenteric plexus is a bunch of nerves located between these two muscles and are responsible for the intrinsic peristaltic activity of gut.
Sub-mucosa: provides support to abundant vascular bundle, lymphatic and nervous structure. Extension of myenteric plexus in sub-mucosa is known as Meissner's plexus.
Mucosa: There are 3 sections from outside to inside and are named as muscularis mucosa, lamina propria and epithelium. Lamina propria is a layer of loose connective tissue.
