Chemical reactions

Processes in which a substances called reactants undergo chemical changes to form new substances called products are called chemical reactions. Chemical reactions are classified based on the nature of products and reactants and also on the changes occurring during the reaction.

(a) Magnesium (Mg) reacts with Oxygen (O2) to form Magnesium oxide (MgO). Reactions in which Oxygen is added to a substance are called oxidation reaction. Therefore, the given reaction is an example for oxidation reaction.

(b) Calcium oxide (CaO) combines with Water (H2O) to form Calcium hydroxide [Ca(OH)2]. Reactions in which a single product is formed from more than one product are called combination reaction. Combination reactions involve formation of bonds and is therefore exothermic. The given reaction is an example for combination reaction and is therefore, an exothermic reaction.

(c) Silver chloride (AgCl) is broken down down into Silver (Ag) and Chlorine (Cl2). Therefore, it is a decomposition reaction in which a single reactant absorbs energy to break down into simpler products.

(D) From the above observations, the correct match is:

  • (a)- Oxidation
  • (b)- Exothermic reaction
  • (c)- Dissociation
  • (d)- Reduction

(d) Cupric oxide (CuO) reacts with Hydrogen (H2) to form elemental Copper (Cu). The oxidation state of copper decreases and therefore, Cupric hydroxide is reduced in the reaction.

(A) Formation of Calcium hydroxide is not a dissociation reaction as it has more than one reactant. Therefore, option (A) is incorrect.

(B) Formation of Magnesium oxide from Magnesium is not a dissociation reaction as it has more than one product. Therefore, option (B) is incorrect.

(C) Dissociation of Silver chloride is not an exothermic reaction as dissociation reaction involve breaking of bond and require energy. Therefore, option (C) is incorrect.

Therefore, the correct option is (D) a- iv, b- i, c- ii, d- iii
