Menstrual cycle is controlled by different hormones starting with FSH from pituitary which controls development of ovarian follicles. The growing ovarian follicles secrete estrogen. The increasing estrogen brings about release of LH and elevated LH level causes ovulation. After ovulation, corpus luteum secretes progesterone which is important for maintainence of pregnancy.
