Microbes are used in the production of many chemicals. As such many chemicals can be synthesised sythetically, but the synthesis may not always be economically viable. Therefore microorganisms are instead used to synthesize these chemicals at an industrial scale for a fraction of the cost.
Escherichia is used in the production of Acetic acid. S. cerevisiae or the baker yeast is a good fermenter and is used to making wine. The yeast converts sugar into ethanol. Lactobacillus as the name suggests is a LAB (Lactic acid bacteria) and is used to produce lactic acid. Clostridium is used to produce acetone and isopropanol and Propionibacterium is used to make propionic acid.
