Prophase is characterised by disintegrating of the nuclear membrane and nucleolus. The chromatin condensation starts to form compact chromosomes.
Metaphase is characterised by the alignment of the condensed chromosomes at the equatorial plate or the centre of the cell.
Anaphase is characterised by the spindle fibres pulling and separating the chromosomes towards the two poles.
During telophase, the chromosomes are at the poles and cytokinesis follows to give rise to two individual daughter cells.
