The polarising microscope was developed by Talbot. In this microscope, polarised light is used which is produced when light waves lie in one plane. The light is produced by calcite prism.

Differential interference microscopy was developed by Mertin et al. It is useful for studying unstained living cells. In this microscope, two prisms are used to create contrasting colours in the image and two sources of light are used instead of one.
An ultramicroscope is a microscope with a system of illumination that allows viewing of tiny particles. When the diameter of a particle is below or near the wavelength of visible light (around 500 nanometers), the particle cannot be seen in a light microscope with the usual method of illumination. The ultramicroscope system is based on light scattering, not light reflection. In 1902, the ultramicroscope was developed by Richard Adolf Zsigmondy (1865-1929) and Henry Siedentopf (1872-1940), working for Carl Zeiss AG.
