The term "genetics" was first used by Bateson to describe the study of heredity.

Law of segregation was formulated by Mendel which states that two alleles of a single gene/factor will be divided equally among each gamete. Thus an individual receives a single allele from each parent.

Wilhelm Ludvig Johannsen, Danish botanist and geneticist proposed the distinction between genotype (genetic traits) and outward appearance that is phenotype in 1909. It was during this time that the term ‘gene’ was used.
