During G1 phase, cell grows in size by increasing the volume of the cytoplasm. RNA and proteins are synthesised. Organelles like the chloroplast and mitochondria divide.
After the G1 phase, the cells may or may not enter a resting or dormant phase called the G0 phase. During this phase, no activities pertaining to division takes place in the cell.
Then the cell enters the S phase, during which the DNA replication takes place.
S phase is followed by the G2 phase, in which the cells synthesises more proteins and gets ready to enter the mitotic phase.
