Vertebrae can be divided into five groups from the top to the bottom of the vertebral column. The first seven are called the cervical vertebrae (C1-C7). The second group consists of the thoracic vertebrae, which are 12 in number (T1-T12). The third group consists of the lumbar vertebrae (L1-L5) which bear most of the body weight. The fourth group consists of the sacrum and the last one consists of the coccyx bone.
