Work is a scalar quantity. It is calculated as
W=F × s cosθ, where θ is the angle between the force applied and the displacement. F and s are force applied and the displacement respectively.
When 0∘<θ< 90∘, the value of cosθ is greater than 0 and less than 1, the work done is positive.
When 90∘<θ<270∘, the value of cosθ is negative. So work done becomes negative.
When cosθ = 90°, the value of cosθ is zero and so the work done is always zero.
