Zn is getting oxidised as there is an increase in oxidation state from 0 to +2. So it is a reducing agent. Substance which gets reduced is called an oxidising agent and here it is Cu where it shows a decrease in oxidation number from +2 to 0. As this reaction involves both oxidation and reduction reaction it is called a redox reaction
