Question

Calculate the number of molecules of water of crystallisation in copper sulphate crystals, if 10g of hydrous copper sulphate crystals give 6.4g of anhydrous CuSO4 on heating. [Cu=64, S=32, O=16]

Solution

Dear Student,

Value of mass of water obtained from heating of 10 g of hydrated copper sulphate is not given so by assuming it to be 3.6 g the value of water of crystallisation can be calculated as follows

Mass of CuSO4 = 160g
Mass of water = 18 g

Mass of waterMass of anhydrous copper sulphate =18 X160=3.66.4X =3.6×1606.4×18 = 5So number of water of crystallisation is 5Regards
