Question

In successive emission of α- and β- particles, the number of α- and β- particles should be emitted for the conversion of U23892 to P82b206 are(a) 7α, 5β(b) 6α, 4β(c) 4α, 3β(d) 8α, 6β

Solution

Dear student

When an alpha-particle is emitted the atomic mass no. decrease by 4 and atomic no. decrease by 2 unit and when a beta-particle is emitted atomic no. increase by one unit and atomic mass no. remain unchanged.

the difference in mass no. = 238-206 = 32
So alpha partical = 32/4 = 8
after emission of 8 alpha particle = 76U206
then after emmision of 6 beta-particle it will be 82U206
