Question

ZnO when heated with Carbon at 1000°C is reduced to Zn metal and CO(g) is evolved. Write a balanced reaction and underline the reducing agent.

Solution

  1. The balanced chemical reaction is given as: ZnO(s)+C(s)1000°CZn(s)+CO(g)(Zincoxide)(Carbon)(Zincmetal)(Carbonmonoxide).
  2. In this reaction, C(Carbon) gets Oxidized to CO(Carbon monoxide) therefore, Carbon (C) acts as reducing agent.
  3. A reducing agent is a substance that loses electron to get oxidized itself, and reduce others in a redox reaction.
