Any of various hormones or similar substances that promote and regulate the growth and development of plants. Auxins are produced in the meristem of shoot tips and move down the plant, causing various effects.

Auxins promote stem elongation, inhibit growth of lateral buds (maintains apical dominance). .Auxin is a plant hormone produced in the stem tip that promotes cell elongation.Auxin moves to the darker side of the plant, causing the cell's there to grow larger than corresponding cells on the lighter side of the plant. The main function of auxin is to help plants grow. Auxin stimulates plant cells to elongate, and the apical meristem of a plant is one of the main places that auxin is produced.
