Median refers to the value which lies in the middle of the data when arranged in an increasing or decreasing order.

Arranging the data in ascending order: -17 , -15 , -10 , -5 , -4 , -2 , -2 , -1

Since no. of observations is 8, an even number, there will be two middle terms. So, the median will be the average of $(\frac{8}{2})^{t h}$ and the $(\frac{8}{2} + 1)^{t h}$ terms.
Median will be the average of the $4^{t h}$ and $5^{t h}$ terms, which are -5 and -4 respectively.

So, median equals $\frac{(- 5) + (- 4)}{2} = \frac{- 9}{2} = - 4.5.$
