Solution

Mendeleev thought that the properties of elements are dependent on atomic weight.

The properties of elements are the periodic functions of their atomic weight.

Mendeleev realized that the physical and chemical properties of elements were related to their atomic mass in a 'periodic' way, and arranged them so that groups of elements with similar properties fell into vertical columns in his table.

Mendeleev arranged elements in horizontal rows and vertical columns of a table in order of their increasing atomic weights in such away that the elements with similar properties occupied the same vertical column or group.
