There are two steps by whch glucose is broken down to release energy-

1= glucose is oxidised in cytoplasm to pyruvic acid by the process known as glycolysis.

2= if oxygen is present then this pyruvic acid is broken down to CO2 , H2Oand 38ATP

and if oxygen is not present then pyruvic acid is broken down in ethanol, CO2, and 2ATP
